Sahitya Sangam started in 1962 on a very small scale by publisher Shree Nanubhai Naik has grown into a banyan tree today in the field of publishing. Sahitya Sangam has done persistent efforts to break the taunting cycle that Gujarati people only know cheque book and passbook.
Sahitya Sangam who lured Gujarat to economical pocket books; has not only published books of poetry and novels in literature, but has published many books useful to Gujarati people in day-to-day life such as Cookery, Health, Development of life, Technical, Astrology etc.
The most notable work by Sahitya Sangam is to publish our classical epics in new look and colors and at economical prices. The work of publishing mythological epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata and Vishnupuran in its purest, errorless, classical form and at affordable cost has been done by Sahitya Sangam.
To ensure books reach every home; Sahitya Sangam published books of literature and other useful subjects under "GRANTH YATRA" project at less than half the market price. Now our Prime Minister and then Chief Minister of Gujarat respected Shree Narendra Modi had dedicated to people the first five-year collection of "GRANTH YATRA". People of Gujarat had given very warm response to "GRANTH YATRA".
After "Siddhraj Jaisinh" for the first time at Surat and then at Ahmedabad books were honored by taking out "GRANTH YATRA" in a horses, elephants and carriages with writers, literati and prominent people of society.
With the purpose of promoting Gujarati literature in other languages; best literary work's translations are published in Hindi, Marathi and English, apart from Gujarati.
For Gujarati public to come closer to books; in schools' of South Gujarat and in cities book fairs have been organized. Also many literary functions of have been organized.
For the purpose of Literary and cultural activities to flourish, Sahitya Sangam has gifted / presented an AC hall named "SHRI NANUBHAI NAIK SANSKAR BHAVAN". In this hall literature, health, music and drama activities keep taking place. This hall has become a platform for artists of Surat to develop. Due to this hall Surat has got many new writers, orators and singers.
Today when stories are getting forgotten Sahitya Sangam told stories with acting to thousands of students in schools by starting a storey telling mission and explained successfully meaning of life through stories.
Three - three generations of Shree Nanubhai Naik are involved in Sahitya Sangam. Shree Nanubhai Naik, his two sons Janak Naik and Kirit Naik and his grandson Chintan Naik. Spread over large space of four floors today Sahitya Sangam is doing work like a University in true sense, as aptly said by well-known writer Shree Bhagvatikumar Sharm.
